Ecological awareness is spiritual. It’s a return to the simple way of life. It’s the act of showing a profound respect and responsibility to the earth that our ancestors knew and practiced. Ecological philosophy, like spiritual philosophy, teaches that all things are united in the eyes of God. No matter how deeply one looks into the fabric of material being, it’s obvious that life forms are interdependent and co-evolving with each other. Every human effort, thought, and spiritual insight is supported by the whole of organic life. Buddha, Mohammed, and Jesus all went directly into nature to seek answers. The earth teaches us its eternal message, quietly and subtly, unlike learning from a lecture or a textbook. Sun Bear of the Chippewa Tribe said, “I don’t think that the measure of a civilization is how tall its buildings of concrete are, but rather how well its people have learned to relate to their environment, as well as to other people.”
